Sookie: Why would killing me cancel the debt?
Eric: Because he decided after listening to gossip and much reconnoitering that you were important to me, and that your death would wound me the way Long Shadow’s had him.
Sookie: Ah… So Hot Rain and Long Shadow were doing the deed, once upon a time?
Eric: Yes, but it wasn’t the sexual connection, it was the… the affection. That was the valuable part of the bond.

Sookie 13 Cover

posted by DeeDee @ 11:24 am on October 18, 2012

The cover for the last Sookie book, Dead Ever After, has been revealed. What do you think?

  1. It looks.. A bit disturbing! No vampires, just a wolf and a tiger lurking.. Although charlaine pretty much screwed up Eric and Sookie after many books building the storyline I had hope for them.. Until now. I’m very excited for the last book but also a bit sad its the last one. Also I’m afraid it might end in a way that’ll make me view the whole Eric/Sookie story I’ve always loved so much in a different light forever.

  2. Yes, but she has her back to Sam, Quinn and Alcide (assuming that’s what the animals represent) and she’s walking toward the sunset. What I find interesting is that each animal seems to be also represented by a plant or flower. I wonder if the real symbolism is there. Now I’m looking at the three bats that seem to be flying away. Could they represent Eric, Bill and Pam? *Sniffles* Will Sookie end up on her own?

  3. Kaspi, I also took the bats as representing vampires. It’s interesting that you see a sunset, because my immediate assumption was a sunrise. After reading your comment, I went back and looked at it, and sure enough, it can go either way. Talk about a matter of perception! I see it as Sookie leaving the supernatural world behind and walking forward into the light (a normal life). I can very much see the series ending with Sookie alone, and I’m okay with that as an alternative to her being with Eric. As long as CH doesn’t make Sam the happily-ever-after. Ugh.

  4. I think it’s rather sunrise… These flowers usually open in the morning – towards the sun. I have a strong feeling that Sookie will end up alone.

  5. Is anyone else wondering about the tomatoes? I mean flower symbology I understand, at least in part, but tomatoes? Lol notice that no fairies. Maybe she’s going to end up with a fairy? After all they are of the light… Just a thought.

  6. I have a feeling that Sookie will be her own woman for once. She talks like she’s independent in all the books but at the same time always relying on somebody in the end. The last book to me was a turning point that going from a girl to a woman represents. I actually liked the last book for making Sookie a woman for once. She addressed something that when you turn thirty or late twenties you sort of realize, It’s time to start growing up, you’re not going to live forever. I don’t see Sookie as a vampire and she definitely will not fully embrace her fairy side after all that happened in the last book. I see her moving on into a normal mortal life. Maybe Mr. C will find a way to take his gift back?

  7. Charlaine said thousands and thousands of times that Sookie will NOT end up alone. * sigh * and she knows how the story would end and that has not changed his mind, then we can stop worrying.

  8. Do you have a link to an example of Charlaine saying that? I’ve never read anything like that.

    Comment by DeeDee — October 20, 2012 @ 8:50 pm

  9. I haven’t either.

  10. I only remember hearing that Charlaine doesn’t believe or doesn’t like “happily ever afters”…so we will see what she means by that. I am happy and sad that this is her last book. I felt like her past few books didn’t compare to the first ones. It felt like she ran out of ideas. I just really hope this last book goes out with a bang.

  11. Okay, Charlaine said that Sookie wont end up alone. That just leaves me to thinking that she will either end up with Eric or living as independent woman out of the supernatural world. The cover looks like a sunrise because the bats are flying away from the sun and the flowers are in full bloom. The tomatoes dream interpretation is said to be good health and denote domestic enjoyment and happiness. But for a woman(in Sookie’s case) means happiness in marriage. That is an unexpected twist for me. Then again i have a feeling that Mr.C figures something out and she becomes mortal with no memory of her involvement in the supernatural world.

  12. Maybe she’ll end up with Remy and Hunter if that happens? Thanks for the insight Tamara.

  13. That is a possiblilty and your welcome.

  14. I’m impatient to get the book and saddened at the same time. I’ve loved her, her adventures and experiences. Sookie is turning her back on all the supernaturals and moving forward on her own. Perhaps finally going to college and getting a CPA degree! As her story goes with a final look back…. sob….

  15. Sookie could have choosen to turn Eric into a human being by reversing his curse with the magic box and her single wish. Instead of that, she saved Sam’s life who was dying … Except if there is another magical intervention, this is not going to happend now and Eric will become a vampire king by marriage with this beautiful queen of Oklahoma …
This cover tells us that Sookie is turning her back on all the Supernaturals and walking towards the sun. There is a natural possibility that she will take responsability for her cousin’s son who is suffering of the same affliction as a telepath and marry his father.
Or she will meet another human, or wait alone for one to show up growing tomatoes and flowers in her garden … (philosophical link to Voltaire’s Candide who experienced all sort of disorders and ends up taking care of his garden where he finally finds his peace of mind)

  16. I think she is going to end up alone.. I did read an interview where harris stated that sookie may not end up with anyone. I will try to find it & post it. Since she has known from book two where she was headed she probably wanted readers to keeping reading in hopes to find out who sookie ends up with.. It makes sense from the cover of the book and where deadlock ended. I wish she’d end up with Eric somehow & QSA will come back. But i fear Harris is going to end the book with sookie alone, why else would she be releasing “After Dead” in October that will ” include details of sookie’s happily ever after”
