HBO's "Deadwood" is my all time fave cable series. Until "True Blood" that is. Thanks for bringing my two faves together in an historically accurate, yet entertaining way. "Al vs the Viking!" What a match. I know many view prostitutes as "less than" but in all honesty, prostitutes have much more realistic views on human nature & the minds of men. They are a sort of chorus to this play called life.
Not that I'm disgusted the profession, only that I can not imagine Sookie as a whore.
Author's Response:That's understandable. It's hard to relate to in it in this day and age, but for an unmarried woman without means in those days, that was the only choice. It was virtually white slavery. There were almost no woman other than whores in Deadwood in those years. Those that weren't whores were married. There were no unmarried women that weren't whores in minning camps like that. It's sad that those were the circumstances of the time, but that was just the facts of life in those days. In large cities like New York, women had just barely begun working in sewing factories for pay, but in the frontier, prostitution was the only option for a woman to make a living.
I've done a lot of reading in the book Soiled Doves, which is a great book, and of course, I live not too far from Deadwood, so this was a fun story for me to write, but in a lot of ways very sad to think about. It does make me apreciate the age we live in so much more. We really forget sometimes how lucky we are.
Anyway, now I'm rambling. I'm glad you read the story and it made an impact, good or bad, that's what I was trying to do with the story.

Loved it, kept me hooked! :D You're an excellent writer!
Talented, bittersweet story. I felt for Sookie and the hopelessness she felt --brought tears to my eyes at the way she had suffered in her young life --
I think this is a winna!
