Eric's necklace

Ever since I saw that first promotional picture of Eric -short hair, on IMDB- I have been basically infatuated by the necklace he wears in that picture.
It's the miniature stake, which I seem to recall has been mentioned in the books as well. So far, though, I don't think I have actually seen him wearing it in the series, which I find rather odd. Why give him a miniature stake necklace in promo shots, only to have him wearing an eagle claw -orwhatthehellitis- instead.
When I came across the HBO shop, I was like "WEE I'm so getting that miniature stake necklace." only to find out it's not being sold, just the eagle claw one -_-
What's up with that?
What significance does the eagle claw hold?
